Responsible betting

What a staking plan can do

It can stop your results depending on when your winners arrive rather than how many arrive. It can cap the damage a single bad bet does to your bankroll. It can make you decide your total exposure before the first bet instead of after the third loss.

What it cannot do

It cannot make a losing selection profitable. No stake-sizing rule changes the expected value of a bet — it only redistributes outcomes. Ground rules worth keeping

  • Only ever fund a cycle with money whose loss would change nothing important.
  • Leave the safety cap on. It costs you a little upside and buys you a floor.
  • When a cycle ends badly, do not immediately fund a bigger one. That is chasing with extra steps.
  • Set the cycle before you look at the odds, not after you have found a bet you like.
  • If you are betting to recover money rather than because you rate the selection, stop.

Warning signs

Betting more than you planned, hiding it, borrowing to fund it, chasing losses, or finding that it is the main thing regulating your mood. Those are not character flaws — they are recognised symptoms, and help exists.
